Abrar Fahad, a second-year student of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), tragically lost his life in October 2019. His death became a symbol of resistance against injustice and a catalyst for significant student-led movements advocating for free speech and democratic reforms in Bangladesh. In recognition of his sacrifice and the ideals he stood for, the Government of Bangladesh has posthumously nominated Abrar Fahad for the Swadhinata Padak 2025 (Independence Award) in the Rebel Youth category.
The Swadhinata Padak is Bangladesh's highest civilian honor, awarded annually to individuals and organizations for their outstanding contributions to the nation in various fields. Awarding this prestigious accolade to Abrar Fahad posthumously serves as a national acknowledgment of his courage and the profound impact of his actions on the country's socio-political landscape.
