21 February is observed as the International Mother Language Day all over the world. The then government of West Pakistan declared in 1948 that only Urdu would be the state language of Pakistan. But the students of our country protested this announcement saying that Bangla would be the state language of East Pakistan. The students formed 'Mother Language Struggle Parishad' and decided to continue their movement. On 21 February in 1952, many students brought out a procession and claimed their demand. But suddenly the police opened fire on the procession and some students died on the spot. Consequently, Bangla was declared the state language of East Pakistan. Afterwards, on November 17, 1999 UNESCO declared the day as the International Mother Language Day. The day is observed to respect one's mother tongue, in multilingual variety and cultural traditions throughout the world. On 21 February, the people of our country generally wake up early in the morning. They walk to Shaheed Minars barefooted with flowers and wreaths in hands. They also put on a black badge to mark the day as a mournful one for them. They offer flowers and wreaths on the foot of Shaheed. Minars by standing silently for some time. Many meetings and seminars are also held. People pray for the salvation of the souls of the martyrs.

একুশে ফেব্রুয়ারি আন্তর্জাতিক মাতৃভাষা দিবস হিসেবে পালন করা হয়। ১৯৪৮ সালে তৎকালীন পশ্চিম পাকিস্তান সরকার ঘোষণা করল যে একমাত্র উর্দুই হবে পাকিস্তানের রাষ্ট্রভাষা। কিন্তু আমাদের ছাত্ররা এ ঘোষণার বিরুদ্ধে প্রতিবাদ করল এই বলে যে পূর্ব পাকিস্তানের রাষ্ট্রভাষা হবে বাংলা। ছাত্ররা মাতৃভাষা সংগ্রাম পরিষদ গড়ে তুলল এবং আন্দোলন চালিয়ে যাওয়ার সিদ্ধান্ত নিল। ১৯৫২ সালে ২১ ফেব্রুয়ারি অনেক ছাত্র তাদের দাবি নিয়ে মিছিল বের করল। কিন্তু হঠাৎ পুলিশ ছাত্রদের মিছিলের ওপর গুলিবর্ষণ করল এবং ঘটনাস্থলেই কিছু ছাত্র মারা গেল। ফলে বাংলাকে পূর্ব পাকিস্তানের রাষ্ট্রভাষা ঘোষণা করা হয়েছিল। পরে ১৯৯৯ সালের ১৭ নভেম্বর ইউনেস্কো দিনটিকে আন্তর্জাতিক মাতৃভাষা দিবস হিসেবে ঘোষণা করে। বিশ্বব্যাপী সাংস্কৃতিক ঐতিহ্য এবং বহুভাষিক বৈচিত্র্যে মাতৃভাষাকে সম্মান জানানোর জন্য দিনটি উদযাপন করা হয়। ২১ ফেব্রুয়ারি আমাদের দেশের লোকজন সাধারণত সকালে ওঠে। খালি পায়ে হাতে ফুলের মালা নিয়ে তারা শহিদ মিনারে যায়। তাদের জন্য শোকের দিন হিসেবে তারা কালো ব্যাজ পরে। কিছু সময় নীরবে দাঁড়িয়ে তারা শহিদ মিনারের পাদদেশে ফুল দেয়। অনেক সভা, সেমিনারও অনুষ্ঠিত হয়। লোকজন শহিদদের আত্মার মুক্তির জন্য প্রার্থনা করে।
