Dowry System

Dowry is a social curse that has spread all over our country. Dowry system refers to the system or custom in some societies in which a wife or her family must pay money or property or both to the bridegroom and his family before or after the marriage. The money or the property that are given is known as dowry. This abominable system is very disgraceful for any woman. Women are the victims of this heinous system. The whole family of the bride has to suffer because the parents or brothers of the bride have to arrange the money to give the bridegroom or to his family. Socioeconomic, cultural and religious factors are responsible for this detestable system. In some societies, it is established as a social norm and they have accepted it normally. A poor husband wants to get a sum of money from his in-laws to start a business or to meet his other needs. In some societies, it has been a culture to give and take dowry. But Islam does not support taking or giving dowry. The Hindu law withdraws the right of a woman's paternal property when she gets married. For this reason, she along with her husband does not hesitate to take dowry. Due to this system, the father's family of a bride often gets bankrupt. Dowry system also demeans women. A social awareness against dowry system is a must to stop this evil practice. The conscious and respected people should come forward to stop it. We should even adopt a law against this system.

যৌতুক প্রথা

যৌতুক একটি সামাজিক অভিশাপ যা ছড়িয়ে পড়েছে আমাদের সমগ্র দেশে। যৌতুক প্রথা বলতে কিছু কিছু সমাজের এমন রীতি বা প্রথাকে বোঝায় যাতে বিয়ের সময় একজন স্ত্রী বা তার পরিবার, তার স্বামীকে অর্থ অথবা সম্পত্তি, কিংবা উভয়ই প্রদান করতে বাধ্য হয়। যে সব টাকা বা সম্পত্তি প্রদান করা হয় সেগুলোই যৌতুক নামে পরিচিত। এ জঘণ্য প্রথা যে কোনো মহিলার জন্য অসম্মানজনক। মহিলারাই এ জঘন্য প্রথার শিকার। কনের পুরো পরিবারকে দুর্ভোগ পোহাতে হয় কারণ বর বা বরের পরিবারকে প্রদান করার জন্য কনের পিতা-মাতা বা ভাইদেরকে এ অর্থ যোগাড় করতে হয়। এ ঘৃণিত প্রথার জন্য আর্থ-সামাজিক, সাংস্কৃতিক এবং ধর্মীয় ব্যাপারগুলো দায়ী। কিছু কিছু সমাজে এটি সামাজিক নিয়ম-কানুন হিসেবে প্রতিষ্ঠিত হয়েছে এবং তারা এটাকে স্বাভাবিকভাবেই মেনে নিয়েছে। একজন গরিব স্বামী তার ব্যবসা শুরু করতে কিংবা অন্য কোনো প্রয়োজন মেটানোর জন্য শ্বশুর বাড়ি থেকে মোটা অঙ্কের টাকা প্রত্যাশা করে। কিছু কিছু সমাজে যৌতুক দেওয়া নেওয়া একটি সংস্কৃতিতে পরিণত হয়েছে। কিন্তু ইসলাম যৌতুক নেওয়া বা দেওয়া কোনোটাই সমর্থন করে না। হিন্দু আইনে বিয়ের সময় মহিলারা পৈত্রিক সম্পত্তি থেকে বঞ্চিত হয়। এ কারণে তার স্বামীর সাথে সেও যৌতুক নিতে দ্বিধা করে না। এ প্রথার কারণে প্রায়ই কনের পিতার পরিবার দেউলিয়া হয়। যৌতুক প্রথা মহিলাদেরকে হীনও করে। এ ঘৃণ্য চর্চা বন্ধ করতে হলে যৌতুকের বিরুদ্ধে একটি সামাজিক সচেতনতা অত্যাবশ্যক। এটি বন্ধ করার জন্য সচেতন ও সম্মানিত লোকদের এগিয়ে আসতে হবে। এমনকী এর বিরুদ্ধে আমাদের আইন গ্রহণ করতে হবে।
